From 1920 to 1947 Sikhs were engaged in political struggles in defence of their right to
control and manage their places of worship to safeguard their cultural heritage and
promote their religion, to join due political weightage in the power structure of Punjab,
and to carve out a due and befitting place for the Sikh community in future political and
constitutional set up in the country. The movement culminated in the passage of the
following resolution by the Executive Committee of the Shiromani Akali Dal on 22nd
March 1946.
